Department of Agriculture

Agriculture is a key economic sector in Limpopo and a significant contributor to the gross regional product. The Limpopo Provincial Government Department of Agriculture, under the leadership of MEC Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba, works hard to maximise the benefits of the sector for all of the citizens of the province.

Vision
A united and prosperous agricultural sector where people, livelihoods and natural resources are in perfect balance.

Mission
To contribute to the economic growth of the province through sustainable agricultural-sector and food-security programmes for a better life for all.

Strategic focus of the department

  • Restructuring of state agricultural assets and promotion of sustainable natural resources management
  • Revitalisation of smallholder irrigation schemes (RESIS)
  • Promotion of agri-business through appropriate market-access strategies, value-adding and the formation of commodity associations to maximise the participation of farmers in the broader economy
  • Development and promotion of appropriate training and research-based production as well as value-adding technology for successful agri-business
  • Promotion of access to commercial agricultural land and agri-businesses for previously disadvantaged individuals
  • Provision of pre- and post-settlement support for land reform projects to ensure that agricultural enterprises are sustainable
    Provision of appropriate advisory support and sustainable poverty alleviation and household food-security and nutrition strategies
  • Establishment and promotion of a reliable information and communication strategy with an emphasis on the beneficial use of information technology
  • Devotion of attention to animal production and health to improve livestock and control animal diseases
