Department of Safety, Security and Liaison

Well-known for being the most peaceful, warm and welcoming province, Limpopo Province is ready to host a successful 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ come June. All the people in all corners of the province should be safe during and after the games. The province is ready!

Safety and security
The Limpopo MEC for Safety, Security & Liaison, Dikeledi Magadzi, is confident that law enforcement agencies are ready for any eventuality during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ spectacle in Polokwane. ‘Criminals will have no place to hide, we are ready,’ Magadzi said. ‘The state-of-the art surveillance and monitoring system installed at the stadium will assist a great deal, as law enforcement agencies at the Venue Operation Centre will be able to detect potential crime even before it occurs and act decisively,’ Magadzi emphasised.

CCTV cameras now cover the whole city. Our law enforcement agencies in Limpopo left nothing to chance during the Peter Mokaba Cup tournament held earlier this year, they focused on ensuring the safety of soccer lovers and their valuables.

The games were used as a ‘dry run’ for the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster to determine the level of readiness by law enforcement agencies in Limpopo in preparation for the 2010 World Cup games to be played in the City of Polokwane.

Ongoing improvements
The Provjoint centre at the old Mimosa Army Base is being renovated to serve as a base for the coordination of all activities related to safety and security. Working conditions are being improved at the ports of entry with a view to speeding up processes during and after the games. The army and police services are also working on the improvement of border control along areas such as the Limpopo River next to Beitbridge and Groblersbrug. The staff complement at the ports of entries has been increased by 13%. The Department of Health and Social Development is working on improving the designated hospitals, to make sure they are ready for any medical incidents which may arise.

Integrated infrastructure
The new Peter Mokaba Stadium is complete and ready to host the games. The fan park will be constructed at the current cricket club and all plans are ready – including safety and risk assessment reports.

Legacy and sustainability
The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ will come and go but, as the Department of Safety, Security & Liaison, we want to ensure sustainable benefits for the citizens of the province. To create a legacy we will be training stewards through the Manyeleti Youth Academy. The stewards who are trained will later serve in the community policing structures at various local municipalities in the province.

The province has also trained hundreds of soccer administrators to continue facilitating soccer games after 2010. Roads have been expanded in the city and other areas. Thousands of young people are being trained in different skills, including speaking foreign languages. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has already trained 17 young people to work in courts. These are the skills that will remain even after 2010. There will also be many other people trained for services in the health and tourism industries.

Marketing and communication
The Department, in consultation with the Limpopo Tourism and Parks Board, will print safety booklets to assist visitors with directions and safety tips. Leaflets and brochures (written in the main languages of the province) will also be distributed to educate local communities about the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

ICT infrastructure
The province is working on the extension of broadband to incrementally cover the whole province including the rural areas. The use of information and communication technologies is essential, not only for the games in 2010, but even beyond. If more people could easily communicate, incidents of crime can be more quickly reported.
