Steeped in history, alive with colourful cultures, surrounded by myths and legends, the area offers the finest of accommodations, which vary from first class hotels to game lodges, highly acclaimed bed and breakfast lodges and traditional cottages and tents. On a mission to meet the needs of business and incentive travellers, the glorious and sunny City of Polokwane will exceed the expectations of local and international leisure tourists. It is a beautiful city surrounded by outstanding tree lined suburbs, unusual townships and fascinating rural villages.

With the lowest crime statistics in South Africa, it is true to its name “Place of Safety” and its schools, both private and state-owned, consistently produce good results and its medical facilities are world class.

The area is a destination with a rich cultural legacy where six languages, Sepedi, Tshivenda, xiTsonga, Isindebele, English and Afrikaans are spoken. It’s a city offering many attractions with a number of museums, historical sites, art and photographic museums and entertainment centres.

Polokwane is ideally located for easy access to other remarkable destinations and outstanding attractions such as the world-renowned Kruger National Park, the Limpopo Transfrontier Park and the World Heritage Site at Mapungubwe.

Peter Mokaba Stadium

Polokwane’s dynamic new stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ is situated in the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex, approximately 5km from the city centre and offers seating capacity for 45 000 fans, 5 000 VIPs and 1 000 officials at each of the matches it is appointed to host.

The sporting complex was named after the late, Polokwane-born, Peter Mokaba, who was a political activist during apartheid and an inspiring leader.

History of football in Polokwane

Profession soccer first came to Polokwane in 1995 when Real Rovers were promoted to the country’s Premier Soccer League. There have been two other Limpopo Province-based sides who have competed at the highest level; Dynamos and Black Leopards. Both of these teams have since been relegated to the lower ranks.

Winner’s Park is another popular club in the area and it now competes in the First Division. The Peter Mokaba stadium holds a special memory for the 2006 African Football Player of the Year. In 2001, Didier Drogba made his debut for Cote d’Ivoire in a decisive CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualification game.
